What opposite overemphasis is illustrated in this example?

The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

- Deuteronomy 29:29

Imagine a person telling you, "I will always be healthy because I eat the best foods, dress properly for the weather, exercise each day, obtain the recommended hours of sleep each night, and never smoke."

How would you respond to this person? Of what value would these means be if God did not bless them? How is this person's error the opposite from "the uncle's mistake" in the story on the previous page? Can you explain why both of these people's reasonings are in error?

The destination of all people is known by God in His secret will. By nature, no person knows whether or not he is elected. The revealed will of God, however, is known. God commands us to seek Him through the means of grace He has given: through serious Bible reading and study, careful church attendance, and sincere pleading with God in prayer for His blessing. God instructs and commands us in His Word to listen to His revealed will - not to attempt to pry into His secret will.
