hysterically, she tried to dash through the dark. Her panic increased as she stumbled over rocks, fell into unseen holes, and crashed into trees. At last, completely exhausted, she fell to the ground where she lay weeping in despair.

After some time, however, she noticed a light moving in the distance. With renewed courage, she arose and ran toward the light, which proved to be her approaching father's lantern.

Sally was happy and thankful beyond words as she safely walked out of the woods with her hand in her father's. The lantern in the hand of her father provided a clear light upon her path; she could now walk safely in the direction she should go.

Psalm 119:105 states, "Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." Why is the "lamp" of God's Word so valuable on our journey through life? What will happen if we try to walk without this "light"? Why would the "light" of God through His Word be deeply valued by those who have experienced something of their sinful and lost condition? Is God's Word your "lamp" and "light"?

1. How do we know that there is a God?

From nature, and from the Holy Scriptures.

2. How can we know from nature that there is a God?

In two ways. (1) by an internal or innate knowledge, and (2) by an external or acquired knowledge.

3. What is internal or innate knowledge?

The knowledge of God which is bom in the hearts ofall men by nature. "Because that which may be known of God, is manifest in them" (Rom. 1: 19).

4. How can we say that there is an innate knowledge, seeing there are fools who say in their hearts that there is no God? (Ps. 14: 1).

Their opinion is a desire rather than an actual belief that there is no God.

5. What is external or acquired knowledge?

The knowledge of God which can be derived from the visible creation. "The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament showeth His handywork " (Ps. 19. 1).

6. How can we conclude from creation that there must be a God?

Because the creation cannot exist or continue of itself, but must be created and sustained by God Himself. "Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the Lord both wrought this?" (Job 12.9).

7. Is the knowledge of God from nature sufficient to save us?

No, because it does not teach us of Christ, the Savior.

8. Is the knowledge of Christ absolutely necessary for salvation?

Yes. "And this is life eternal, that they might know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou has sent" (John 17.3).

9. Where must we obtain this saving knowledge of Christ?

From the Holy Scn)7tures (2 Peter 1:19).

The written Word of God (John 5.39, 2 Thn. 3.15).

11. Who ordered the Holy Scriptures to be written?

God. "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God" (2 Thn. 3:16).
