From what enemies does Christ's Church need to be protected? If Christ were not the protecting King of His people, what would happen to His flock? |
Secondly, as King, Christ protects His Church; He preserves His people in their state of grace. God's children not only need to be delivered from Satan and sin, but they also need to be kept and protected from their spiritual enemies. God's Church not only needs Christ to gather, but also to keep them in the flock - as the following story illustrates:

A good shepherd purchases a lamb and places it in his flock. This is a great privilege for this lamb. But this faithful shepherd not only buys, he also cares for, this lamb. He protects it from attacking enemies. He preserves its health. If it wanders from the fold, he brings it back. Christ, as King, is the Great Shepherd of His flock. He not only gathers His lambs, He also protects and preserves them. How does Psalm 23 testify of this? Why is this truth such a comforting knowledge for Christ's Church?
