My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

How is sincerely praying upon the basis of God's grace different from sincerely praying upon the basis of my qualifications?

5. Praying sincerely

  • Praying when our walk does not follow our talk - Heart and tongue, word and work, lip and life, and prayer and practice must echo one another.
  • Asking Pharisee-like, not publican-like - The sincere person knows and feels his many insincerities. He knows and uprightly confesses who he is, apart from God's grace.
  • Viewing prayer as a gift from man to God, instead of from God to man - God does not need human prayer, but human beings need godly prayer. Without prayer, spiritual life withers.

    • A filthy beggar was once told to beg at the king's palace; that those who did so never returned empty. Looking at his coat, he felt it was not good enough, his face not clean enough, his shoes not dressy enough, etc.
