one regarding the Lord's Supper and "the essential (the real) presence of Christ," they could not agree.
Luther taught a real, physical presence of Christ at the Lord's table; Zwingli taught only a spiritual presence in the faith of the believer. How did Calvin's teaching fit between and modify both of these views? Both the Roman Catholic and Lutheran insistence upon the physical body and blood of Christ being present in the bread and wine is based upon Jesus' words when instituting the Lord's Supper, as follows: "Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is My body. And He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; for this is My blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins" (Matthew 26:26-28). (See also Mark-14:22-24; Luke 22:19-20; I Corinthians 11:23-25.) include "../doctrineincs/regufont.html"; ?>The Calvinistic/Reformed/Presbyterian spiritual interpretation of these verses disagrees with the Roman Catholic/Lutheran |
