How does this example illustrate the importance of obeying God's command never to have any dealings with the devilish powers of occultism? The state of one's soul at death is permanent. There is no "later" or "second chance" to be saved as some groups proclaim. Scriptural support for this false belief is based upon two texts in the First Epistle of Peter, in the face of a great number of scriptural references to the contrary. These two texts are:
"For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
-I Peter 3:18-20
"For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit."
-I Peter 4:6 The misinterpretation of these verses, the belief that they teach a "second chance," is made by picturing this preaching to the souls of the lost as a preaching which takes place after they have died, in their intermediate state.
