How is a person's life enriched if he is free from television possession and film and video entertainments?

  • The cleverness, courage, and excitement of the thief and his crime is often shown as "exciting" in today's television programming. Any portrayal of stealing that does not present it as a sin and a crime is breaking the eighth commandment.

    • 9. Television breaks God's ninth commandment by its frequent portrayal of numerous forms of lying.

  • A hero is frequently presented as clever and impressive as he lies his way out of a tight spot in today's television programs.
  • Comedy often uses exaggeration and truth distortion to achieve its "humor."
  • Advertising often powerfully presents less than or more than a true picture of its products. Any portrayal designed to deceive is a transgression of the ninth commandment.

    • 10. Television breaks God's tenth commandment by its largescale promotion of covetousness.

  • The continual portrayal of good looks, athletic talent, glamorous scenes, material richness, and flawless heroic performance generates a widespread promotion of covetousness.
  • Television's powerful sight-and-sound advertising industry continually seeks to convince people that they cannot be happy or content without purchasing their products. This promotes a covetous spirit, the opposite of a contented spirit, in our society. Covetousness and its promotion are transgressions of the tenth commandment.

  • The previous twenty factors present a clear warning against modern television programming and its viewing. "Abstain from all appearance of evil" (I Thessalonians 5:22). "For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of
