    - Whether you promise and intend to see these children, when come to years of discretion (whereof ye are either parent or witness), instructed and brought up in the aforesaid doctrine, or help or cause them to be instructed therein, to the utmost of your power?

  • Bringing a television set into one's home contradicts one's promises to personally live unto God and to instruct one's children to forsake the world, flee from sin and its lusts, and value the things of God and eternity as most important. The "sermons" that children see are generally stronger influences than the sermons they hear.

    • 10. Television "controls" more than it is "controlled."

  • While there is an off/on switch on a television set, there is not one on the human heart. Our natural, sinful hearts are attracted to sin; therefore, our ears listen, and our eyes look for it. Sin has a strong tempting, drawing power. Even established children of God, with the Apostle Paul, must lament that they do not have perfect control over their own hearts to always turn away from the bad and toward the good. "For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do" (Romans 7:18-19).
  • One person's special weakness may be a strong attraction to violence, while others may be attracted to sports, sexual temptation, emotional character attachment (soap opera series), the love of money and materialism, and so on. Every person has a weak point, a bosom sin, a character weakness. Television will sinfully tempt each person most powerfully at the point(s) in which he is the weakest and most prone to fall.
  • Of the ninety-seven percent of homes which have television today, ninety-one percent indicate that the main use of it is for entertainment purposes.
  • Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.

    And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

    - Deuteronomy 11:18-19

    But every man is tempted, ! when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

    - James 1:14-15

    Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD. Blessed are they that keep His testimonies, and that seek Him with the whole heart.

    - Psalm 119:1-2

    That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

    And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

    - Ephesians 4:22-24

    Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

    - II Corinthians 7:1
